(FOX 11) One of NASA's most innovative experiments is under way now.

Astronaut Scott Kelly is beginning a year in space. During this time, NASA will be studying the effects of long term space journeys as part of the preparation for the first human mission to Mars.

Making the project exceptionally unique is the fact that Scott's identical twin Mark, also an astronaut, will be here on Earth acting as a control subject for the experiment.

Researchers will be able to compare the identical twins' mental and physical conditions to better track the changes that are caused by being in space for such a long time.
