This shooting, one of two involving LAPD officers last night, took place about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, near the intersection of 59th Street and Broadway, said LAPD spokeswoman Officer Liliana Preciado.

According to Preciado, officers were in the area conducting an operation. They attempted to make a pedestrian stop on the suspect but he ran away.

At some point officers located the suspect near 59th Street at which time he allegedly pointed a gun at police and an officer-involved-shooting took place.

The unidentified suspect was shot by police. The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to Preciado.

It's unknown what led police to try to stop the man. There was no immediate confirmation that a weapon was recovered at the scene. It's also was not known whether the officers were wearing any kind of body camera when the OIS occurred.

The OIS was being investigated by the department's Use of Force Division and the L.A. County District Attorney's office.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting in South LA.

At approximately 11:50 p.m. Tuesday night officers were conducting a crime supression in the neighborhood near Broadway Street and Slauson Avenue.

Police say when officers approached a male in his mid to late twenties, he ran south on Broadway.

The suspect began firing at officers from the rooftop of a residential building on the 4800 block of Broadway. Sgt. Frank Preciado says LAPD officers took cover before returning fire and shooting the suspect in the torso at least once.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical but stable conditon. Once released, police say he will be charged with attempted murder of an officer. It's not known if the suspect has a prior history with the police department.

A handgun was recovered from the scene. The LAPD is investigating the incident and talking to witnesses. Anyone with information is being asked to call (213) 485-4164.
