Woman found shot to death in East Los Angeles

A woman who was fatally shot in East Los Angeles while sitting in an Uber vehicle apparently was wounded by a stray bullet fired by a suspect who remains at large, authorities said Thursday.

Deputies sent to Union Pacific Avenue near Bonnie Beach Place at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday found the woman suffering from a head wound, according to the sheriff's department.

The woman died at a hospital. Her name was withheld, pending notification of relatives.

"Homicide detectives have learned the victim was an unintended target and was struck by a stray bullet,'' said Deputy Armando Viera Jr. of the Sheriff's Information Bureau. ``The male adult driver and female juvenile passenger were not injured.''

No weapon was recovered, and no suspect information was released.

The woman was riding in a vehicle with an Uber decal on the window, but it was unclear if the vehicle was in service at the time of the shooting, authorities said.

"Investigators at the scene identified a home of interest near the intersection where the shooting occurred,'' Viera said. ``They contained the scene, obtained a search warrant and notified Special Enforcement Bureau to assist.''

The house was cleared and no suspect was found, Viera said. Some people were taken into custody for questioning.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
