Woman charged with 3 felonies after dog dies in hot car

- Ontario Police arrested a woman on Sunday after she allegedly left three animals inside a hot parked car, resulting in the death of a dog.

Jennifer Lynn Arriaga, 42, was charged with three felony counts of animal cruelty, after police say temperatures in the vehicle reached over 113 degrees.

It happened at the 3400 block of Shelby Street in Ontario. Two dogs and a cat were left abandoned in the car for an unknown amount of time.

When officers arrived on scene, they found one dead dog, and a cat and second dog alive but under heavy distress.

"One of the dogs was deceased, the cat the other dog were very much in distress, overheated, our officer immediately took possession of those two dogs and took them for medical care," said Sylvia Lemus, a senior cruelty investigator with the Inland Valley Humane Society.  "Both dogs were sharing a crate, so the one that was alive was still in the crate with the dog that was deceased, very sad."

Officers broke the window, and immediately began to treat the animals.

The deceased dog was taken to the Inland Valley Humane Society & SPCA, and the surviving animals are currently being treated by emergency vets.

Humane Society officials demonstrated how quickly a car can turn into an oven in the summer heat. A thermometer revealed the inside of an example vehicle was over 120 degrees within a matter of minutes.

"It's extremely hot weather, inside your vehicle it gets about 30 degrees warmer inside in a matter of 30 minutes, there's no ventilation and it can cause death to your pets," Lemus said. "It is unlawful to leave your pet in a vehicle under penal code 597.7 you are not to leave any animals in an unattended vehicle."

Inmate records show Arriaga was still behind bars as of 9 p.m. on Monday. Her bond is set at $50,000, and she will be making her first appearance in court in Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday.
