Woman and her dog killed in Long Beach house fire

A fire at a home in Long Beach claimed the life of an elderly woman and a dog, authorities said today.

The blaze in the 2300 block of Daisy Avenue was reported at 9:19 p.m. Wednesday, according to Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin.

The department dispatched 29 firefighters to the scene, according to Heflin. The first engine reached the scene at 9:23 p.m. and reported smoke and fire coming from the front of the home, Heflin said. The fire was knocked down
in about five minutes.

Inside the home, firefighters discovered the body of a woman, who was identified as 82-year old Joan Pizzato - along with two dogs, Heflin said.

They gave one of the dogs, a 14-year old Labrador named Dude oxygen, but he couldn't be revived. The other dog, 10-year old Dolly was unhurt.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
