Widower keeps wife's memory alive by bringing joy to others

- Three times a week, Philip Chen plays his homemade harp at Providence Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance.

Twenty years ago, Philip's wife, Jenny, heard that playing the the harp could keep Alzheimer's away.

She turned around and she said, "Phil, you can make one, can't you?" said Philip.

Jenny worried about his health.

"She was always healthier than me," said Philip.

So the former mechanical engineer started building harps.

"Once I took it out, I was hooked. I was addicted to making the harp," said Chen.

He's now built 19 total. All of them...for his wife.

"When I play the harp, we do not even need to talk. Just communicate through the music," said Chen.

But Jenny was the one who grew sick. Stage 4 cancer brought her to Providence Little Company's Oncology floor.

Every night, the harp concerts grew shorter and shorter.

A few weeks later, she left Philip and their family of nearly 20.

"She went to be with the lord," said Philip.

Philip was left without an audience. So one day, he came back to the hospital that helped ease Jenny's way.

"This place is so special to me. When I came over here....when the first time I played. I cannot even start. I just start to cry. Because everything looks just like the time she was here," said Philip.

He stays close to where she was, playing two doors down from where she lay sick.

But the music touches the end of every hall.

The music is powerful enough to pull people in deepest of pain from their beds.

"Everyone needs something. And everybody might not have a family to go to...and he's real good," said patient Ida Bryson Yanci.

"It takes your mind off being in the hospital," said patient Alan Ridley.

Philip yearns for the day he'll reunite with Jenny. But for now, he uses his love for her to bring joy to others, proving that true love never dies.

"We meant for each other, we really love each other," said Philip.
