Where have all the LA freeway flowers gone?

In 2009, beautiful floral murals placed along Southland Freeways. They were called Harmony Floralscapes. It was eco-advertising. The next big thing at the time. Billboards that were clean and green. Then Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called the floral artwork "...a symbol of what's possible right here in Los Angeles."

It was a partnership with Toyota, Caltrans, The LA Conservation Corps and Santa Monica Eco Advertiser Greenroad Media. And It was SO California. There were 7 of these floral billboards designed to promote the Toyota Prius using as many as 20,000 blooms each.

But Fast forward 8 years and they are nothing but empty plots with dirt and shredded tarp material.

The flowers... the Harmony Floralscapes, are LONG gone and what remains are ugly patches of busted land like this, what was supposed to be the "next big thing" – what some might call blights on the freeway.

And nothing’s been done about it… we wanted to know WHY?

Toyota pointed the finger at Greenroad Media saying: "We supported (the project) with the purchase of flowers, in recycled crates, for a display period of 4 months. Greenroad Media and the LA Conservation Corps supported all land management for the program."

So we went to Greenroad Media. Turns out the company went belly up years ago. But we did find former Greenroad Executive VP George Manyak who told us there was a deposit to Caltrans to turn the property back to the condition it was in and that it was up to CALTRANS to fix the land.

Then we went to Caltrans which disputes that and says there was never any money set aside. The program ended. The drought hit and it all died. Simple as that.

That's where all the flowers have gone. Will someone spend the money to fix these spots--  consider the idea --- planted!
