Wayward balloons triggered power outage that left over 5,000 SCE customers without electricity

- Wayward balloons triggered a power outage today that left more than 5,000 Southern California Edison customers in South Los Angeles without electricity.
The outage happened around 4:30 p.m. when metallic balloons got tangled in some elevated distribution lines, said Paul Griffo, an SCE spokesman.
As of 9 p.m., crews were still working to return power to 5,059 homes, he said. Initial estimates indicated repairs would be finished by 11 p.m., but more time may be needed, Griffo said.
The boundaries of the outage are west Manchester Avenue, south Vermont Avenue, west 121st Street and Crenshaw Boulevard, he said.
Metallic balloons caused 924 power outages last year for SCE.
Metallic balloons always need to be tied to a weight, as required by California law. Serious injuries can occur when balloon contact is severe enough to bring down power lines, according to the utility.
