Firefighters halt progess of 50-acre brush fire in La Verne
(FOX 11/CNS) - La Verne and Los Angeles County firefighters continued their efforts Monday to extinguish a slow-moving brushfire that charred about 40 acres of brush and injured three firefighters.
The fire, which burned through medium brush, was reported about 3:10 p.m. Sunday, said Los Angeles County fire Capt. Ron Singleton.
As of daybreak Monday, the flames were about 50 percent contained, the county fire department reported.
Firefighters stopped the forward progress of the blaze and halted airdrops at dusk, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Ed Pickett. They expect to finish putting out hot spots at daybreak.
Three firefighters -- two from L.A. County and one from La Verne -- suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze and were taken to hospitals for treatment., Pickett said. Their injuries were not immediately described.
La Verne police shut down through traffic on Baseline Road between Fruit Street and Japonica. Baseline Road was reopened to traffic in all directions shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Los Angeles County fire conducted voluntary evacuations from the county area east of La Verne, police said. Those evacuations were called off about 5 p.m. when the flames no longer threatened any structures, said Los Angeles County Dispatch Supervisor Michael Pittman.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, Pittman said.
Police reported that La Verne experienced a power outage during the fire fight in the area of Bonita and I streets. Power was restored to most customers within an hour. It's unclear why the outage occurred or whether it had anything to do with the blaze.
