Unanswered questions remain about UCLA shooter Mainak Sarkar: Why now?

People a lot smarter than me, who study the human mind for a living, will tell you there are typically never any clear signs of when someone is ready to snap.

To pick up a gun and kill.

This is one of so many questions raised by the actions of 38-year-old Mainak Sarkar at UCLA. He was by all accounts a successful, brilliant engineer, with an undergraduate degree in India, a graduate degree from Stanford and a doctorate from UCLA.

But he left Westwood three years ago, so why now?

Why did he, as police in Minnesota believe, kill his wife, drive to Southern California, stalk and kill Professor William Klug and try to kill another professor who was off campus and not named by authorities. We may find out, we may not.

We do know he made some vague, unsubstantiated allegations that Klug stole his ''code'' and ''was a sick person," which totally contradicts what everyone who knew Klug said in the El Segundo community where he was a well-known and well-liked little league baseball coach, husband and father of two.

Oh, and one other thing. Apparently Sarkar was a very caring person. In Professor Klug's fourth floor office at UCLA, where police say Sarkar gunned him down in cold blood before killing himself, there was a note:

"Please check on my cat."
