Two LA County deputies injured in Bellflower shootout

- One of the two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies shot Thursday night in Bellflower was released from a hospital Saturday while the other continues to recover from his wounds, authorities said.

The suspect, 39-year-old Juan Martinez, was taken into custody Friday morning by a SWAT team that fired tear gas into a small structure in which he was hiding behind a house in the 9000 block of Mayne Street in Bellflower, Sheriff Jim McDonnell said.

Martinez was being held on $1 million bail.

The remaining hospitalized deputy was recovering from his surgery and was improving at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, although his condition remains serious, Deputy Ryan Rouzan of the Sheriff's Information Bureau said.

Martinez was behind bars in the Sheriff's Inmate Reception Center, booked on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder on a police officer and kidnapping a civilian.

A Tuesday arraignment was scheduled in Los Angeles, according to online inmate records.

According to the sheriff's department, deputies were conducting a DUI checkpoint on Lakewood Boulevard at about 10:50 p.m. Thursday when a motorcycle deputy pulled Martinez over in the 16600 block of Lisa Avenue.

Martinez got out of his vehicle with a firearm and ``fired several rounds at the deputy, striking him multiple times,'' according to sheriff's officials. The deputy fired back at Martinez, who fled the scene on foot.

As a second set of deputies responded to the shots fired, Martinez shot at them, hitting one, sheriff's deputies said.

A third group of deputies began pursuing Martinez, who allegedly fired shots them before running out of view.

Martinez was not wounded in the exchange, deputies said.
