Two dead in separate crashes during rainfall on 10 Freeway, 5 Freeway

Two people were killed Monday morning in separate crashes during rainfall on freeways in Pomona and Sun Valley.

A Hyundai sedan and a big rig collided at 4:23 a.m. on the eastbound 10 Freeway just west of the White Avenue offramp in Pomona, California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball said.

Witnesses told the CHP it appeared the smaller car rear-ended the big rig at a high rate of speed. One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

That crash came after another car slammed into a big rig just after 3:40 a.m. on the eastbound 10 at the nearby Garey Avenue off-ramp causing the big rig to burst into flames, the CHP said. The drivers reportedly got out of both vehicles.

A SigAlert was issued at 3:52 a.m. shutting down the HOV lane and lanes 1,2,3 and 4 at Garey Avenue but lanes 3 and 4 were reopened at 4:33 a.m. the CHP said. All lanes had been reopened by about 9 a.m., the CHP reported.

The Sun Valley fatal crash was reported at 4:14 a.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway at Tuxford Street, Kimball said. It also involved a car and a big rig and one male was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:42 a.m. His age not available, Kimball said.

A SigAlert was issued at 4:43 a.m. for lanes 1, 2, 3 and 4, he said. The HOV lane remained open. Crews worked to clear the scene, an effort that was continuing about 9:30 a.m., the CHP reported.
