Suspect found dead after hourslong standoff at Beverly Grove home

An armed man barricaded in a residential building in the Beverly Grove area of L.A.'s Fairfax district was found dead Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

The standoff began about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, when police were called to the 600 block of North Edinburgh Avenue, west of Fairfax Avenue and south of Melrose Avenue, said Los Angeles police Officer Tony Im. It ended nearly 10 hours later.

A woman and child who had possibly been held by the suspect exited the building about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to police and reports from the scene.

Crisis negotiators and a SWAT team were called to the location and fire department personnel staged nearby.

Officers found the suspect dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound about 2 a.m. today, said Officer Liliana Preciado. His name was withheld, pending family notification. No other injuries were reported.
