Man dies after CHP officer-involved shooting on 5 Freeway in Irvine

A suspect was shot and killed Monday night by a California Highway Patrol officer on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Irvine, authorities said.

No officers were injured in the shooting, which occurred just after 7 p.m. on the southbound side of the freeway north of Alton Parkway, according to Capt. Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority, which took the suspect, a man in his 30s, to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana.

Authorities said the suspect ran across the northbound freeway lanes before jumping to the southbound side and was struck by a vehicle before the shooting, but Kurtz said he had no information about a collision.

Officers gave CPR to the suspect at the scene before he was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The southbound lanes were closed for the investigation.
