Suspect injured in police shooting near USC's Health Sciences Campus

An inmate who tried to escape police ended up crashing a minivan Wednesday into a tree outside the USC School of Pharmacy.

Detectives said 36-year-old Freddy Bailon, of Los Angeles, carjacked a woman while he was on the run.

"Officers who were pursuing him approached him at which time one officer fired at that male," Meghan Aguilar, a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department, said.

Bailon was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Police booked him for a felony on Tuesday after he was arrested for holding a knife to a girl's throat at an apartment on the 5200 block of Ithaca Avenue.

Bailon was taken from jail on Wednesday to Los Angeles County Medical Center for an exam when he escaped around 3:30 p.m., authorities said.

"At the time he broke free I'm not sure if he was handcuffed or not," Aguilar said

A detective and two officers from the Hollenbeck Division were with Bailon during the exam. It's unclear what led to the shooting on Zonal Avenue in Boyle Heights.

Detectives didn't recover a weapon linked to the suspect, but still needed to search the area for more evidence.
