Sheriff's deputy hospitalized after being injured by his own service weapon

An LA county sheriff's deputy is in the hospital being treated for a gunshot wound. He was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Lynwood after getting hit with a bullet investigators say came from his own weapon.

Officially they're calling it an unintentional discharge. It happened at 1:38 p.m. at the Compton Sheriff's Station. A deputy who was on duty hurt himself when a round from his service revolver struck his leg.

How could something like that happen?

Capt. Darren Harris says it could have been grabbing the holster or holster strap the wrong way. It could have been a faulty weapon.

An investigation is underway to determine that. The deputy is said to be in serious but stable condition.

He's alert, talking and expected to recover.
