SYLMAR, Calif. (FOX 11)
A security guard was stabbed to death by a transient who tried to steal beer from a store in Sylmar, police say.
It happened just before 3pm Sunday at the Food 4 Less off of Glenoaks Blvd. and Hubbard Street.
Family members identified the victim as Joe Lopez.
"I'm just shocked, that somebody would get killed like this over something so dumb," said Moises Tagle, Lopez's cousin.
"I'm just shocked that somebody out there is so stupid over beer, and would kill a human being, let alone another person, just a human over just a can of beer."
An eyewitness told FOX11 she saw Lopez chasing a transient man who was running with two beers.
She said the two men grappled on a sidewalk before the suspect pulled out a knife and slashed Lopez's throat.
She said the suspect then ran across the street and tried to get into a nearby house before being apprehended by police.
Tagle told FOX11 he got a call from family in Mexico, telling him something had happened to Lopez.
He recalled the final conversation he had with him.
"He was telling me that everything was going great for his life, that things had just been working out for him, he has two jobs, this was his second job, very hard working kid," he said.
Police have not yet released the name of the suspect they've taken into custody.
