63-year-old experienced hiker found dead in Angeles National Forest

The body found in the water below Hermit Falls Saturday was a missing 63-year-old experienced hiker, authorities said.

The Antelope Valley Search and Rescue Team found the body of La Puente resident John Richard King about noon at the base of Hermit Falls, said Deputy Ryan Rouzan of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

"Mr. King's family arrived on scene to positively identify his body,'' Rouzan said. "There appears to be no foul play, and the fall was accidental.''

King was reported missing at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the sheriff's department.

He left his home on Thursday to go hiking at Chantry Flats in the city of Sierra Madre, and did not return, a sheriff's statement said. His vehicle was located in the parking area of Chantry Flats.

A deputy told Fox 11 that King was an experienced hiker who knew the area well and who normally would be involved in searches for missing hikers himself.

The Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team was involved in the search, along with deputies from the Temple Station.
