FOUNTAIN VALLEY (CNS) - A 39-year-old driver suspected of hitting and fatally injuring a jogger in Fountain Valley and then leaving the scene was arrested on Thursday.
The jogger, a 48-year-old Santa Ana man whose name was withheld pending notification of his next of kin, was struck about 9 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Brookhurst Street, just south of Heil Street near Mile Square Park, according to Fountain Valley police Sgt. James Cataline.
The arrested man was identified as John Motesharrei.
Investigators followed several leads and around 11:55 a.m. officers located a white Ford SUV, believed to have been involved in the fatal collision, in a residential neighborhood in the 10000 block of San Angelo Avenue in Westminster, police said.
"The registered owner of the vehicle was contacted at a nearby residence and interviewed," according to a police statement.
After further investigation, officers arrested Motesharrei on suspicion of felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter, police said.
Investigators believe the victim, who was found in the right shoulder of northbound Brookhurst Street, was struck while running on the curb line in the roadway outside the park, Cataline said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Anyone who witnessed the crash was urged to call the Fountain Valley police Traffic Bureau at (714) 593-4487.
