Santa Ana couple discovers python in their bathroom

A Santa Ana couple is thanking an Orange County officer for removing a ball python out of their home Saturday morning.

Maria Chan was about to use the restroom when she looked through the windows and saw the snake slithering in the attached storage room.

She screamed so loudly her husband Francisco woke up and rushed to see what was going on.

"I said I can't see. I take my glasses off. Put my glasses on, the snake is real under there," Chan told reporter, Leah Uko.

Chan called Santa Ana police who informed him it was midnight and Animal Control was closed.

But thankfully, Officer Justin Collins was on duty and is familiar with snakes.

"Fortunately the officer that they called is a collector of snakes. Raises snakes so he had no problem dealing with them," said Corporal Anthony Bertanga with Santa Ana PD.

"He was able to take it to his house where the python requires heat and he had an extra cage because otherwise it would have been left here for the weekend."

Police said they were not sure where the python came from or how it got into the house, which made this weekend call even stranger.

They're currently looking for the snake's owner.
