Choking back tears, Robby Gordon stood at the gates of a house he knew as home all his life and said, "Obviously, we're grieving over the loss of my dad and his wife Sharon."
The heavy grief comes a day after the bodies of Robert Gordon and Sharon Gordon were found in the family home and hours before police announced that Gordon's stepmother died from strangulation and his father shot himself to death.
Concern about their well being first surfaced Wednesday. When police showed up the bodies were found in an upstairs room of the large home in the city of Orange. Police say a rifle was also found.
Crying as he spoke, Gordon said, "I grew up on this property my whole life. I learned everything I know in that little barn over here."
When he moved to North Carolina for NASCAR racing Gordon gave the home to his dad and step-mom to live in.
"I'd like to understand this is very very tough," Gordon told reporters, "And, it's not just tough for me. It's tough for my sisters."
Once the news broke, the racing world responded.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. tweeted "praying for friends @Robby Gordon and @Beccy Gordon and the Gordon family during this difficult time. Hope they find strength and support."
Jimmie Johnson's tweet: "Heartbreaking news this morning. Thinking of the Gordon family and friends."
Said Robby Gordon, "I'm so sad and I can't believe it."
