Riverside County officials push back on Russian hacking report

(FOX 11) - "It is important here to not overreact and to not panic."

The words of Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin in the aftermath of a Time Magazine article suggesting his county may have been ground zero for hacking on Primary Election Day 2016 - possibly even Russian hacking.

Riverside County Registrar Rebecca Spencer didn't like the article either saying no one has come to her from the Secretary of State's office or Federal authorities to suggest there was some evidence of tampering or meddling. Also, she says the word "hacking" to her implies someone broke through the security and she says that didn't happen.

The Time Magazine article states hackers "may have used private information like social security or driver's-license numbers, to access the central voter-registration database for the entire state of California."

The DA's office says they got a few dozen complaints from voters. Spencer said she's had quite a few, but all but a couple could be explained.

Meanwhile, the DA told us, "We don't have any evidence that the Russians did this. We have no forensic evidence as to who did this at all. Maybe the person or the people who did this are from Riverside County."
