Police search for man who held woman against will in Pico Union District

LOS ANGELES (CNS / FOX 11) - Police searched on Sunday for a man, possibly hit by police gunfire, who was caught with a woman held against her will inside an SUV.

Police shot at the man as they tried to break into his dark-colored SUV at 3:35 a.m. in the Pico Union District, just west of downtown Los Angeles, a spokeswoman said.

The man was described only as between 22 to 30 years old, and the LAPD investigators do not know if he was hit by the police gunfire, said Officer Norma Eisenman of the LAPD's Media Relations Section.

Officers were dispatched about 3:35 a.m. to the 1300 block of Ingraham Street in response to a report of a woman screaming. They found a man and a woman in the rear of a dark-colored SUV, which was parked at the curb, Eisenman said.

"The officers believed that the woman in the vehicle was being attacked and attempted to enter the vehicle, but the door was locked," she said. "The officers broke the window and attempted to free the victim -- at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred."

The drove off with the woman still inside. She was able to get out of the vehicle, less then a block away.

Officers called paramedics, who transported the woman to an area hospital with stable life signs, she said.
