Market clerk killed in possible shootout with robbery suspects in South LA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11 / CNS) - A store owner shot to death inside a market in South Los Angeles had come to the aid of one of his workers and exchanged gunfire with two robbery suspects, one of whom later died, it was reported Monday.

The store owner was identified by the coroner's office as 61-year-old Los Angeles resident Carlos Martinez.

News reports identified him as an immigrant from El Salvador.

About 8 p.m. Sunday, he had come from the back of Martinez Market at 6565 S. Normandie Ave. to help a female employee who had been confronted by two masked men who ordered her to empty the cash register, according to police and reports from the scene.

Martinez exchanged gunfire with the suspects and was struck multiple times and killed, authorities said.

The robbers fled and one of them later died at a hospital, according to the LAPD.

The name of the dead suspect was not immediately released.
