Police: Armed suspect found dead after standoff in South LA
LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An armed suspect who was holed up in a South Los Angeles apartment, prompting the evacuations of at least 20 people, was found dead inside of an apparent of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
The standoff began around 12:45 a.m. in the area of San Pedro Street and Gage Avenue, where the man allegedly fired shots in the air and pointed a gun at police. Residents were evacuated from the building as SWAT officers tried to talk the man into surrendering.
Authorities fired rubber bullets to scare the suspect and a robot was sent into the apartment before dawn to determine if the suspect was alive.
The suspect was found dead just before 4:45 a.m., police said.
