Pasadena Senior Center hands out free food for the elderly

- John Wakefield, 64, woke up at 4:30 a.m. Friday to be one of the first in line at a monthly food donation at the Pasadena Senior Center.

Roughly 600 seniors made their way to cart away food to last them through the month, which is a growing need for this limited-income community.

Executive director Akila Gibbs said the elderly should not go hungry, especially around the holidays.

"We want to make sure they have fresh protein and produce. Our senior population should not be forgotten," Gibbs said.

The Pasadena Senior Center is hoping to raise $6,000 to make sure these folks get fresh turkey and produce for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Gibbss said seniors should not have to choose between taking medication or going hungry.
