Pasadena Humane Society's 'fat cat' going up for adoption

A 29-pound cat found walking along an Altadena street without any identification will finally go up for adoption Wednesday, one week after becoming an internet sensation when photos of the portly feline were released by the Pasadena Humane Society.

Appropriately named "Chubbs'' by the Humane Society, the 10-year-old Himalayan mix has been undergoing medical exams, and he needed to have a portion of his back shaved due to his extremely matted hair. Too big to fit into any of the Pasadena Humane Society kennels, he's been living in staff member's office.

The society initially wanted to put him up for adoption on Sunday, but the process was delayed when several people came forward claiming ownership after Chubbs' photo started making the rounds online. The ownership claims, none of which could be verified, came from as far away as Wales.

Chubbs will be put up for adoption at noon -- on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Chubbs is looking for a new family who is willing to work with their veterinarian to put him on a healthy eating plan and cover any medical costs associated with his care,'' according to a statement from the Pasadena Humane Society. "Chubbs will need further medical testing for diabetes at the adopters' personal veterinarian.

"While we know Chubbs is adorable, obese cats are more likely to suffer from health issues like heart disease, diabetes and thyroid issues.''
