Elderly woman rescued from fiery crash into motor home

(CNS/Fox11) - A motorist in a Volvo was killed in a fiery crash in Gardena, which also consumed a mobile home where some neighbors rescued a woman and her adult son.

A 2003 Volvo speeding west on 135th Street struck the north curb, crashed through a wooden power pole and careened across Halldale Avenue, through a wooden fence and into a mobile home park, said Gardena police Sgt.Mark Thompson.

The Volvo stopped "inside of a mobile home along with the power pole," Thompson said. "The vehicle and mobile home immediately became engulfed in flames."

The woman and her adult son were asleep inside the trailer, and suffered minor abrasions and burns. A neighbor suffered minor injuries while trying to rescue them and their pets, before police and firefighters arrived.

Firefighters were dispatched at 11:40 p.m. Saturday and had the fire out within 20 minutes of their arrival, according to the county fire department.

The lone person inside the Volvo was pronounced dead at the scene,Thompson said.

Several dogs and cats were singed, but all are believed to have survived, a videographer at the scene said.

The Gardena Police Department's Traffic Bureau asked anyone with any information regarding the crash to call them at (310) 217-6189.
