Officer-involved shooting in Pacoima leaves man dead, officer hurt

A man was shot and killed Wednesday morning in an officer-involved shooting in Pacoima.

Los Angeles Police officers were called at about 1 a.m to a home on the 10900 block of Telfair Avenue, near Telfair Elementary School, to investigate a reported stabbing, according to Officer Norma Eisenman of the Department's Media Relations office.

Officers found the man on the carport of the home and when he came down, he began throwing objects at officers, prompting police to use less-than-lethal round to try to control the man, Eisenman said.

The man then armed himself with a pick-ax and tried to get into a nearby residence. The officers became concerned about the safety of the public and their own safety, and an officer-involved shooting occurred, Eisenman said.

The man, in his mid-to-late 20s, died at a hospital, said LAPD Lt. Chris Ramirez. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

A male stabbing victim and two officers who were hurt in the incident were taken to the hospital. The stabbing victim was hospitalized in serious condition, Ramirez said. One officer was treated and released, and the other was still being treated hours after the incident, Ramirez said.

Telfair Elementary School will be open today and parents are asked to drop off students on Kewen Avenue.
