Murder Suspect Arrested On Suspicion of Rape

A 21-year-old man wanted on suspicion of murdering a 20-year-old, mentally deficient woman in Fresno County was arrested on suspicion of raping someone in El Monte this morning, authorities said.

Officers received a report at 5:11 a.m. of a rape that had just occurred at 4136 Tyler Ave., El Monte police Sgt. Richard Luna said. The suspect, identified as Kaleo Kealoha Schreiner of Tracy, was reported to still be at the address and armed with a handgun, Luna said.

Officers arrived and saw a male who matched the suspect's description running in the 3800 block of Tyler Avenue, Luna said. A perimeter was set up and Schreiner was found by a police dog about 9:15 a.m. as he hid behind a garage at 3811 Esmeralda Ave., Luna said.

The dog bit Schreiner, who resisted the canine and ignored an officer's commands to surrender, Luna said. "A bean bag was deployed on Schreiner who then complied and was taken into custody," Luna said. "A loaded handgun was located where Schreiner was found hiding."

Schreiner was treated at the scene by county firefighters and taken to County-USC Medical Center for additional treatment, Luna said. Schreiner would remain in custody pending medical clearance, at which point he would be booked at the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, Luna said.

Police from Arcadia and West Covina assisted in setting up the perimeter and a sheriff's helicopter provided aerial surveillance, he said. Schreiner had been wanted by authorities for more than two weeks as a suspect in the killing of 20-year-old Megan Troen of Tracy, according to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, which reported that Troen's body was found July 30 in the California Aqueduct in the Firebaugh area.

Schreiner and Troen, who were acquaintances for years, had been seen leaving Troen's house on July 20. She was never heard from again, authorities
said. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office announced on Aug. 5 that a warrant accusing Schreiner of murder had been issued for his arrest.
