CANYON COUNTRY, Calif. (FOX 11 / CNS) - A man was fatally shot by a resident after he allegedly tried to break into his apartment in Canyon Country, and the renter was being detained while the investigation proceeded, a sheriff's deputy said today.
The shooting took place about 9:10 p.m. Friday, in the 26700 block of Isabella Parkway, Deputy Lisa Jansen said.
The renter who shot the alleged intruder called the sheriff's department to report the shooting, Jansen said. The resident and other witnesses told sheriff's personnel the man who was shot was trying to get into the apartment.
The renter reportedly told the man to leave numerous times and that he didn't live there, but the shooting victim apparently ignored the warnings, according to Jansen. When the suspect allegedly broke out a window and started to climb inside the apartment the resident shot him multiple times.
The victim was taken to a hospital where he died, Jansen said. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The renter was being detained at the Santa Clarita sheriff's station pending the conclusion of the investigation, Jansen added. The renter's handgun was taken into evidence.
It's unknown why the deceased man tried to get into the apartment.
Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477. All tips can be made anonymously.
