Man shot by sheriff's deputy after allegedly stabbing woman outside Chatsworth courthouse

A knife-wielding man was shot Monday by a sheriff's deputy and died at a hospital after allegedly stabbing a woman who had driven with him to the Chatsworth courthouse.

The man and woman arrived at the courthouse in a vehicle that was driven by the woman, and the two got into "a verbal altercation,'' Deputy Kimberly Alexander of the Sheriff's Information Bureau said.

"The victim was driving when the suspect stabbed her,'' Alexander said. "The victim was able to exit the vehicle and run toward the courthouse entrance doors.''

The suspect caught up with the woman as she climbed the courthouse steps "and continued to stab her with a large knife,'' Alexander said.

"A deputy and a security officer confronted the suspect and ordered him to drop the weapon,'' Alexander said. "The suspect did not comply and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.''

The man was struck once in the upper body and the woman was pulled to safety, according to Alexander.

Paramedics were sent about 12:05 p.m. to the courthouse and took the man and the woman to a hospital, where the man was pronounced dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The woman sustained multiple stab wounds and was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, Alexander said.

No deputies were injured.

Witnesses told reporters that the suspect and victim arrived at the courthouse together in a black Audi sedan and the woman asked an attendant at a parking kiosk to call for help.

The courthouse was closed for the rest of the day and was expected to reopen for business on Tuesday, officials said.
