Man fatally shot by South Gate police following pursuit

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide bureau detectives are assisting the South Gate Police Department with an officer involved shooting investigation that resulted in the death of a male Hispanic adult.

The incident occurred in the 9800 block of Bowman Avenue in the city of South Gate, on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at approximately 4:15 p.m.

According to detectives, South Gate police officers attempted to stop a silver Lexus for a traffic violation when the driver led police on a short pursuit.

Moments later, the driver stopped the vehicle and was detained by police, but his passenger walked away from the car, according to police.

Officers later located the passenger hiding out inside a shed located in the backyard of a home, at which point, police said he brandished a handgun at the officers.

Officers fired at the suspect striking him at least once in the chest, he was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

No officers were injured.

It is unclear if the suspect fired his handgun at the officers.
