Man dies after climbing transformer in Fullerton

A man climbed onto an overhead transformer and caught fire in Fullerton died of his burns Sunday at a hospital in Orange.

The man died at 5:54 a.m. at the UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, according to the coroner's office. His name will be released pending notification of next of kin.

The man was critically injured when he climbed onto a transformer and caused an explosion at about 3 p.m. Saturday at Brookhurst Street at Commonwealth Avenue, Fullerton police Sgt. Kathryn Hamel said.

It left nearly 630 Southern California Edison customers temporarily without power. A post on the Edison website indicated power went out at 2:54 p.m. Saturday, but it quickly was restored, Hamel said.

Fullerton police asked anyone who might have seen the incident or anyone with information on the man to call (714) 738-6715.
