Large fire burns through commercial building in Van Nuys

A large force of firefighters today put out a fire that heavily damaged a commercial building and attached warehouse in Van Nuys.

The blaze inside the building at 14937 Calvert St., near the intersection with Kester Avenue was reported about 12:10 a.m. and knocked down at 2:15a.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. As flames spread through the location, the blaze was designated a "major emergency structure fire," Humphrey said, adding the designation occurs when more than 16 fire companies are dispatched to the scene of a fire.

The department eventually sent 161 firefighters to the site, he said. One firefighter was treated for exertion and then returned to the firefight, Humphrey said. No other injuries were reported.

The building houses a number of construction-related companies, including All Right Electric Inc., Rethink Environmental, Castle Flooring and National Hardwood Flooring, according to Internet records.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation. A damage estimate was not immediately available.
