Two adjacent buildings at an apartment complex in Anaheim were heavily damaged by fires Friday, and firefighters worked to prevent the flames from spreading to other nearby structures.

The fires were reported about 5:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of East Benmore Lane, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority.

Personnel from the Anaheim, Fullerton and OCFA were sent to the scene, Concialdi said.

The fires burned through the roofs of the two-story buildings, and firefighters adopted a defensive mode, pouring water on the structures from outside.

Within about 90 minutes, the firefighters apparently had gained the upper hand on the flames, and appeared to have prevented them from spreading to several other nearby two-story apartment buildings in the complex.

What sparked the blaze was not immediately determined.
