LAPD SWAT search for person who reportedly fired at a pedestrian

- A Los Angeles police SWAT team searched today for a gunman reported by a member of the public to have fired a rifle in the Arlington Heights area, but no suspect was found.

The search was triggered about 2 a.m., when a person reported being fired upon -- but not hit -- by someone with a rifle near Seventh Avenue and Washington Boulevard, said Los Angeles police Officer Jane Kim.

Patrolling officers also heard gunshots and went to the area, Kim said.

The investigation led to a location where the suspect was thought to be holed up, and a SWAT team was sent to the scene, prompting some evacuations, Kim said.

As a precaution, students and staff at Arlington Heights Elementary school were relocated to Cochran Middle School, according to the Los Angeles Unified School District.

No suspect was found, however, and by about 9:30 a.m. the search was suspended, the evacuations were lifted, and arrangements were made to return the students and staff to Arlington Heights Elementary.
