Highway 101 to remain closed in Montecito area through at least Jan. 21

Highway 101 was expected to remain closed another week after last week's storm slammed the area with mud and debris, officials said.

Caltrans tweeted on Tuesday, "Our hard-working crews/contractors remain on site 24/7 to get #Hwy101 open thru Santa Barbara. It will still be at least six more days of clean-up & repairs with no specific opening estimate yet. #Hwy5 to #Hwy46 is the best detour option for travelers."

The mudslides on Jan. 9 ravaged Montecito, destroying at least 65 homes and damaging more than 460 others, officials said. They also forced the shutdown of U.S. 101, which is the only major freeway between Santa Barbara and points east.

Officials said 20 people were killed and multiple people were missing.
