SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FOX 11)
Lifeguards rescued a group of about 20 Rancho Verde High School students off the coast of La Jolla in San Diego on Tuesday after they had trouble completing a long-distance swim.
San Diego Fire Rescue officials say two of the students were taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries. Paramedics treated at least seven other students. Most of the students' symptoms were due to exposure to cold water, which is currently about 58 degrees.
The students were part of a swim team and were with their coaches. Lifeguard Lt. John Sandmeyer says lifeguards gave an ocean safety talk to the students before they set out from La Jolla Cove to swim about a half-mile out into the ocean.
Rancho Verde High in Moreno Valley is on spring break this week, and so far there has been no comment from school administrators.
