Haz-Mat team called to LAX to probe package set for international flight

A hazardous-materials team was sent on Monday to inspect some rope that was being used to secure a parcel destined for an overseas flight at Los Angeles International Airport.

The parcel was in a secured inspection area between the Tom Bradley International Terminal and Terminal 3, and was to be placed on a flight to the Phillippines, said Airport Police Officer Rob Pedregon. The parcel itself was cleared, but the rope, when cut open, contained a white powdery substance, he said.

No evacuations were ordered, but the inspection process was continuing early this afternoon, Pedregon said.
