Handcuffed suspect escapes police custody at La Palma hospital; found hiding hours later

A handcuffed man who ran from police while being treated at the La Palma Intercommunity Hospital Sunday morning was found a little close to nine hours later and a half-mile away in a residential neighborhood.

Javier Anguiano, 30, and still handcuffed, was found about 10 a.m. in the backyard of a home in the 8000 block of Sundance Lane, according to La Palma police Sgt. Ron Wilkerson.

An officer had earlier seen Anguiano in the area, Wilkerson said.

"So we got a containment set up. We had two teams of officers searching the backyards and he was located in one of the backyards," he said. "He just never really got out of the area. He just went to the nearest residential
area."

Anguiano was being treated for injuries from a traffic crash, when he escaped about 1:15 a.m. from the hospital at 7901 Walker St. He was last seen running south, Wilkerson said.

During his brief freedom, Anguiano's arms were handcuffed together in front of his torso and did not have a weapon, but was considered dangerous, police said.

Anguiano was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of dangerous drugs and outstanding warrants, Wilkerson said.
