FOX 11's Christine Devine goes one-on-one with Bernie: Staying in the race, immigration and Trump
(FOX 11) - Bernie Sanders is staying in the race until the last ballot is cast.
The Democratic presidential candidate said in an interview with FOX 11's Christine Devine that his campaign will continue to push forward "to the last delegate that can be convinced."
On the 2016 primary race:
When asked if he's harming the Democratic Party by staying in the 2016 primary race, Sanders said he would look at it a bit differently.
"I think many of those Democratic commentators are strongly pro-Hillary," the Vermont senator said. "The truth is that in the recent polls you may have seen, there was an NBC poll just yesterday, we were defeating Trump by 15 points. Secretary Clinton was defeating him by 3 points. That's true for statewide polls as well. I think we are, our campaign, is the strongest campaign out there."
On tuition-free public colleges and universities:
Just weeks away from California's June 7 primary, Sanders appeared at a rally Monday night at Santa Monica High School.
Sanders has called for free tuition at public colleges and universities and says it would be funded through what he calls a Wall Street speculation tax, which would place a small levy on every stock, bond or derivative sold in the United States.
The proposal aims to generate billions of dollars in revenue toward free tuition.
"Wall Street's greed and illegal behavior drove this country to the financial brink, and Congress bailed them out," Sanders said. "Wall Street is doing really well now. I think it's time for them to help the middle class of this country."
On immigration:
Immigration is a big issue for Californians -- and Sanders has called for the need to pass comprehensive reform.
"We need a path toward citizenship. We need to end the current deportation policies. And we need to stand up vigorously against the bigotry that we're hearing from Donald Trump and his supporters," he said.
On November:
If Hillary Clinton is the Democratic nominee, Sanders says he will do everything in his power to prevent a Trump presidency.
"First of all, let me be as clear as I can be, and that is that I will do everything that I can to defeat Donald Trump," Sanders said. "Donald Trump's bigotry and his economic ideas will be a disaster for this country and our standing in the world, and I will work 24/7 to make sure that he is not the president."
