Fox 11 News In Depth: Back to School

It's time to go back to school! For LAUSD, that's August 15th. This week on Fox 11 News in Depth, we talk with school administrators and others in advance of the annual rite of passage.
SEGMENT ONE: LAUSD Superintendent Dr. Michelle King says she's excited about the start of the new school year. There are new pilot projects including one to try a later 8:30am start for some middle schools. That's also the idea behind a State Senate Bill proposal (SB328).
King says that research shows when kids get more sleep they do better in school. We also hear from the new president of the LAUSD School Board, Dr. Ref Rodriguez. A past school administrator, he has ideas for those in middle school grades and for teacher pensions plans which some think could need some help in the years ahead.
SEGMENT TWO: We're joined by a trio of superintendents in smaller school districts. Rialto's Dr. Cuauhtemoc Avila, Lennox's Kent Taylor and Monrovia's Dr. Katherine Thorossian. The three talk about everything from campus safety to what parents should know as the school year begins.
SEGMENT THREE: Denise Albert is one of 'THE MOMS'. Their podcast and blogs have proven popular online as they talk with celebrities about parenting. Now, Denise talks with us and gives some terrific back to school and smart shopping advice.
SEGMENT FOUR: Denise Albert tells parents to talk to their kids. She explains why good communication is important. And, we look ahead to next week's show with Dick Van Dyke!
