Explosion at Tesoro refinery in Carson, no injuries

An explosion and fire at a refinery in Carson prompted a hazardous materials response, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Firefighters were dispatched at 1:19 p.m. to the Tesoro refinery in the 23200 block of South Alameda Street after getting a report of an explosion in a tank and active fire, according to Inspector Gustavo Medina of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

A hazardous materials team was called to the scene, Medina said.

Initially, evacuations were ordered for a quarter-mile radius around the refinery, which is in a commercial area, but the order was lifted just after 2:40 p.m. and those at nearby properties were advised to shelter in place,
according to Sgt. Joe Ramos of the sheriff's Carson Station.

Alameda Street was closed between 223rd Street and Sepulveda Boulevard and the public was warned to avoid the area, according to the sheriff's department.
