Driver shot and killed after hitting Garden Grove police officer

A man was shot and killed after he allegedly struck a police officer with his car outside a motel in Garden Grove Sunday morning.

Two officers were checking parked vehicles in the parking lot of the Grove Motel at 9821 Garden Grove Boulevard around 12:30a.m., when they spotted three people inside a white Honda Accord, according to Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney.

"The officers tried to make contact with the occupants of the vehicle," Whitney said. "After the initial contact, one of the officers was struck by the car as it was trying to flee. An officer-involved shooting occurred and the driver was shot several times."

He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The injured officer was also rushed to a hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries.

A man and a woman who were also in the car were not hurt.

"The passengers in the car are cooperating with detectives and were not arrested," he said.
