Driver of big rig arrested on suspicion of DUI after crash

The driver of a big rig was in custody Wednesday after he crashed off the side of the roadway on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway in Santa Clarita, then fled, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 10:21 p.m. Tuesday at McBean Parkway. Responding officers found the big rig in a ditch and its cardboard load spilled over freeway lanes, said California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos.

Officers were not immediately able to locate the driver, Villalobos said, adding authorities were searching the area and checking area hospitals to see if anyone was brought in related to the crash.

He was found around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday in the area and arrested on suspicion of DUI, Villalobos said. No
injuries were reported.

The two right lanes were blocked for cleanup and reopened around 5:15 a.m.
