DMV Computer outage leaves many without services

Dozens of Department of Motor Vehicles offices in the Southland and across the state remained out of commission Wednesday due to a continuing computer problem, but authorities said offices are expected to come back online throughout the day.

DMV officials said the outage occurred Monday. Affected offices are still able to provide driving tests, help customers with paperwork, answer questions and reschedule appointments. The department noted that its website was not affected, so online services remain available.

Local offices affected by the outage include those in Arleta, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Compton, Costa Mesa, Culver City, Fullerton, Glendale, Hawthorne, Hollywood, Inglewood, the Los Angeles Driver License Processing
Center, Los Angeles Metro Business Service Center, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Pomona, Santa Ana, Santa Monica, Torrance, Van Nuys, West Covina, West Hollywood, Westminster, Whittier, Winnetka Industry Business Center and Winnetka.

From Zohreen Adamjee:

More than a hundred California DMV offices were hit with a massive computer outage. The DMV says several hard disks were lost from a primary and backup system.

That means the DMV turned away many people.

"I was ...I was livid. My whole day was planned around coming here and getting my actual license," says Jason LaNantia.

There were some who got help.

The DMV could still provide driver tests and help with paperwork.

"Even though the computers are still down they did end up giving me a pass so I can use it for the next month and then they'll just send me my tags in the mail," said Amanda Pastrnak.

"They stamped my papers with a time and date -- told me to show that to the cops if they pulled me over," said Dylan Luster.

Others were directed to offices in Montebello and San Pedro not affected by the outage.

The DMV says crews worked through Tuesday night to rebuild the system and field staff tried getting individual offices up and running Wednesday.

For many, the fix can't come soon enough.

"I didn't curse, but I cursed when I was out the parking lot," said LaNantia.
