VIDEO: Crews battle commercial fire in Hyde Park; Nearby dog trainer saves pets from burning home

A firefighter suffered a minor leg injury today battling a blaze that collapsed the roof of a one-story commercial building in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The fire was reported just after 6 p.m. in the 6600 block of South Eighth Avenue in South Los Angeles, Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department said. The blaze sent up a plume of smoke that was visible for miles.

The building housed a welding shop, according to a report from the scene.

The fire took down high voltage lines, complicating the efforts of more than 55 firefighters, including units from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, who responded and knocked down the flames in 48 minutes, Stewart
said.

A nearby dog trainer leaps into action during the fire to save his dogs from a burning home.

Some crews remained at the scene after knockdown, dousing hot spots, Stewart said.
