Car strikes pedestrian, drives into wall of Walnut home

A jogger was run over from behind and killed today by a motorist in eastern Los Angeles County, and the driver was detained by sheriff's deputies.

A 1989 Toyota Camry had been going east on La Puente Road when it struck a man jogging east in the bike lane, from behind, said Lt. Steve Jauch of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau.

The car then carried the jogger several yards on the hood of the car until it went off the road at Citadel Drive, and smashed through the back yard wall of a home on Bernard Avenue, Jauch said.

Deputies were dispatched at approximately 5:50 a.m., in response to a 911 call from a homeowner in the 20200 block of Barnard Avenue.

The jogger was pronounced dead at the scene, said Deputy Sara Rodriguez of he Sheriff's Information Bureau. He was detained at the sheriff's Walnut Station and did not appear to be injured, Jauch said.
