California voters approve Prop 66 which speeds up the death penalty

After a sharply divided contentious race on the death penalty in California.

The results are in.
A late ballot count showed that voters have chosen to pass proposition 66, the measure aimed at speeding up the death penalty process.

It will now allow lower courts to hear petitions challenging death row instead of going directly to the supreme court.

It also limits successive petitions and allows for more lawyers to take on cases.
Death penalty opponents had filed a lawsuit to block the implementation of the measure.

Meanwhile, prop 62 which repeals the death penalty and replaces it with a strict life sentence was rejected by voters.
